This Association Lost Almost 358,000 Members, and It’s Still Standing (Graphic)
Many associations complain about declining or stagnant membership. But how many could lose almost 358,000 members and still carry on?
That’s exactly what happened to the National Association of Realtors. The association had almost 1.4 million members at its height in 2006 but saw membership drop to less than 1 million by 2012, thanks in large part to major declines in the real estate market.
Yet in 2013, it bounced back. Association membership, which is handled at the state and local level, was back into seven figures last year, and a report for September of this year shows the growth has continued. Total membership at the end of last month was 1,093,144, according to the association.
Here, in the form of a graphic, is NAR’s wild ride.
